Start a Business You Care About

My brother had a dog walking business last year that was fairly successful. Even though it was turning a profit as it hit the one year anniversary of its opening, he decided that he didn’t want to continue operating it. He shut it down to the chagrin of most of the people in his life. I was one of the few people who believed that his choice was the right one. That’s because I knew that he didn’t really enjoy the business and therefore its financial success wasn’t the only thing that had to be taken into consideration.

The reason that I understood this was because I had a similar experience when I was first starting out in the job world. I got a job working at a wedding stationery store owned by a friend. It paid me well and the hours were flexible but I just didn’t really care about the work. It made no difference to me whether people wanted DIY wedding invitations or beach wedding invitations and dealing with those people all day eventually wore on me.

My situation wasn’t so terrible because it was just a job. When you start your own business, you are more invested in making it work. That’s why it is really important to make sure that any business that you start is one which sells products or services that you truly care about. If you don’t, you’re going to end up feeling unsuccessful regardless of how well the business does on paper.
