Watching out for Competition when Linking

When running an online business you have to understand the importance of linking.  Adding high value links to your website is a great way to build an ebusiness.  You will find that with good links you can really boost your traffic.

One of the big rules about linking is to use related, but not competing links.  You do not want to link to someone who is selling the same product or service that you are.  That just does not make sense.  Instead you want to seek out a website that is related to your product or service, but that does not sell it.

For example, if you are selling ecommerce software you would want to seek out websites that talk about ecommerce.  Use links to sites that offer advice for the ecommerce business person or sites that offer general information about it.

You should do a search and seek out some of the top ranked websites that come up for your keywords.  Go visit the site and make sure they are not a competitor.

You want your business to be a success, so do not create more competition.  There is enough out there already.  Choose good links, but be careful with your choices.  Make sure to completely check out any site before you link to it so you do not run into competition problems.

Completely agree with your point about “related” links and the potential conflicting “competing” links. Wanted to throw out an easy and free way to build at least one additional “related” inbound link. Yokld.com provides this opportunity where local businesses can submit their business information, including website URL for inclusion in its directory.
